Future Homes Standard: Working towards NetZero Homes with British Gas

[Sustainable Living] Sept 01, 2025

To understand the steps required to meet the requirements of the delayed Future Homes Standard, which will require new homes to produce 75–80% less carbon emissions compared to 2016 regulations, we have partnered with British Gas to explore new technologies and real-world solutions.

The key focus for us is to better understand how we can design and deliver homes that are both net zero-ready and functional for the homeowner. Customer engagement is a critical part of this work, ensuring the technology is not only effective but also easy and enjoyable to use.

Specifications Under the Spotlight

In partnership with British Gas and heat pump manufacturer Daikin, we launched the first phase of the Low Carbon Homes pilot at our Breathe development in Kiveton, Rotherham. This trial is designed to explore how a combination of low-carbon systems can reduce energy use, lower bills, and improve comfort for homeowners.

The participating homes are equipped with a 6–8 kWh Daikin air source heat pump, 4 kWh solar PV panels, 5 kWh battery storage, and an electric vehicle charger and smart thermostat. All systems are connected via a Hive Hub – the home’s “operating system” – giving residents one-stop visibility and control over their energy use through the Hive app. This integration allows homeowners to set schedules, track spending, and let the system optimise energy use to deliver both savings and comfort.
